Language and Literature

Literature is the art of writing; in the most modern sense, it is an art in itself. It can also be defined as a particular aspect of verbal or written communication that utilizes all the resources of language to multiply the effects on the recipient, whether a reader or an audience. Furthermore, literature can be understood as any type of text; some even argue that it can include different types of work based on symbols, such as comics and images.

A literary genre is considered to be each of the formal manifestations of literary works according to a classification that takes structure and content into account. From Plato and Aristotle until almost the 19th century, three basic genres were established based on the imitation and description of nature: from the former arises the dramatic genre (tragedy, drama, comedy), from the latter the lyrical (poetry), and from their fusion, the epic.
